Our shores are rabies hotspots. |
Seals, often admired for their playful nature, can pose unexpected health risks, including the potential transmission of rabies. With our beaches now considered rabies hotspots, it’s vital for everyone to understand the importance of swift action after possible exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis involves a series of Verorab injections given on days 0, 3, 7, and any day between 14 and 28, administered in the deltoid muscle for adults or the anterior thigh for children under two years. Rabies human immunoglobulin, available at Christian Barnard and Tygerberg Hospitals, must be administered as soon as possible and no later than day 7 after exposure. For avid surfers, divers, and kayakers who frequently interact with the ocean, pre-exposure prophylaxis is highly recommended and involves just two Verorab injections on days 1 and 7. Taking these precautions can be lifesaving and ensures safe enjoyment of our beautiful coastline. Contact us if you’d like to learn more about pre-exposure prophylaxis. |
